Together with eight partner institutions – U.S., Asian and European universities and research institutes – unibz was able to obtain substantial funding from the EU research programme Horizon 2020 for the 4-year project on Industry 4.0 (Smart Manufacturing and Logistics) called Industry 4.0 for SMEs. The goal of this research project coordinated by the Free University of Bozen is to create an international interdisciplinary research network working on three areas: first, identifying needs and elements that can help businesses switch to intelligent production modes; second, the development of new design solutions, production concepts and logistic systems for SMEs; third, the creation of new organisational and business models that are suitable to the changing production scenario. The SME 4.0 Project: Industry 4.0 for SMEs – Smart Manufacturing and Logistics for SMEs in an X-to-order and Mass Customisation Environment will last four years. Funding will be provided by the European Union Research and Innovation Programme Horizon 2020. Partner institutions and companies include: The Technical University of Košice (Slovakia), The Montanuniversität of Leoben (Austria), Elcom (Slovakia), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA), Worcester Polytechnic Institute (USA), Chiang Mai University (Thailand) and SACS MAVMM Engineering College (India).
